Unlocking the Potential of Self-Care in the Fight Against NCDs | UNGA 80

At the 80th United Nations General Assembly last week, my Global Office for Policy and Philanthropy, which supports my the Wellbeing Foundation Africa strategy, was privileged to participate in high-level dialogues on health, equity, and sustainable development, including the Business Council for International Understanding and Global Self-Care Federation roundtable on Unlocking the Potential of Self-Care in the Fight Against NCDs, where they joined leaders across sectors in affirming that self-care is not a peripheral practice but a decisive pillar of resilient and equitable health systems.

True to BCIU’s mission of fostering international understanding through meaningful dialogue and concrete action, the discussion emphasised that with over 70% of global deaths caused by noncommunicable diseases, equipping individuals and communities with the tools and agency for self-care strengthens systems, improves outcomes, and advances equity worldwide.

Throughout the 80th United Nations General Assembly, we shared the Wellbeing Foundation Africa’s work in championing community self-care across maternal, newborn, and adolescent health, informed by our Wellbeing Africa Institute for Research and Development (WAIRD), which continues to generate evidence and data-driven solutions for women, mothers, and young people, particularly those facing vulnerability.

I extend my appreciation to BCIU and Global Self-Care Federation for convening this important dialogue, and to Dr Mohammed Hassany, Assistant Minister for Public Health Initiatives of Egypt, and Zelia Bukhari, Director, Global Policy and Advocacy, The Toyin Saraki Global Policy & Philanthropy Office, for sharing invaluable insights.
