Midwifery

Her Excellency Toyin Saraki was appointed Global Goodwill Ambassador to the International Confederation of Midwives in 2014, and as such, she advocates for resources and support for, and awareness and recruitment of midwives on a global scale.

2020 marks the Year of the Nurse and Midwife

Midwives are at the heart of actions to improve maternal, newborn and child health. Because midwives and nurses devote their lives to caring for mothers and children by giving lifesaving immunizations and health advice; the World Health Organization is marking 2020 the Year of the Nurse and Midwife.

Her Excellency believes we must recognise, respect, retain, remunerate and increase resources for midwives. She joins the ICM in commemorating the year with a focus on celebrating, demonstrating, mobilising and uniting. Together with ICM, Her Excellency will demonstrate through evidence the impact of midwives and the case for investing in midwives. She is mobilising midwives, midwives’ associations, women’s groups and the wider global community to advocate for midwife-led care. Lastly, she is uniting midwives and women towards a common goal of gender equality.
