During the 80th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week, I was honoured to attend the important dialogue Time to Disrupt: Making Every Pregnancy Safe, convened by Every Pregnancy and Axmed with the support of the Gates Foundation, hosted at Goals House.
Moderated with excellence by Isra Chaker and Emmanuel Akpakwu, this panel brought together an inspiring group of global leaders, including Dr Zaher Sahloul, President of MedGlobal; Alice Kang’ethe, CEO of Beginnings Fund; Doris Mollel, Founder of the Doris Mollel Foundation; and Hon. Harriette Chiggai, Women’s Rights Advisor to the President of the Republic of Kenya. Their reflections illuminated both the stark realities and the pathways forward in advancing maternal and newborn health, particularly in contexts of fragility, displacement, and crisis.
For me, this conversation reaffirmed the central truth that the survival and wellbeing of mothers and children cannot be secured by rhetoric or fragmented interventions, but by investing in community-rooted systems of care. At my Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we have seen how trust, education, adaptability, and respectful, rights-based approaches can sustain care and grow systems.
It is through courageous partnerships, sustainable financing, and a commitment to women and communities that we will achieve lasting change, ensuring that no mother or newborn is left behind.
