Blueprint to Close the Women’s Health Gap: How to Improve Lives and Economies for All

As a World Economic Forum Champion of the Global Alliance for Women’s Health and a direct contributor, I am honoured to welcome the launch of the Blueprint to Close the Women’s Health Gap: How to Improve Lives and Economies for All Report, developed in collaboration with McKinsey Health Institute.

Women’s health inequities have persisted for far too long, with women globally living 25% more of their lives in poor health compared to men. This distinctive report underscores the economic and societal potential of closing the women’s health gap and tracks the progress towards doing so using novel metrics and insights, while providing a comprehensive framework for reshaping health outcomes and advancing global economic stability. By targeting critical conditions and systemic barriers, the Blueprint illuminates the path to unlocking $1 trillion in global GDP by 2040, while restoring millions of healthy life years annually.

This work builds upon the robust foundation laid by previous reports, including Closing the Women’s Health Gap: A $1 Trillion Opportunity and Women Matter Africa, both of which I had the privilege of shaping through my frontline insights and engagement, providing critical regional context. The Wellbeing Foundation Africa remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing health outcomes for women and will continue efforts beyond the Sustainable Development Impact Meetings 2024 and the Women’s Health Impact Tracking (WHIT) Platform Meetings, as our programming, policy and advocacy directly strengthen maternal, newborn, and child health systems while addressing broader health disparities, such as breast cancer.

The Blueprint to Close the Women’s Health Gap delivers the data, strategies, and urgency required to drive bold and collective action, serving as a rallying call for governments, United Nations organisations, private sector corporations, and communities to prioritise women’s health as an essential pillar of global prosperity. This vision seeks to realise a future where women lead healthier lives, free from preventable inequities, and where their wellbeing fosters more resilient economies worldwide.
