The Hologic Global Women’s Health Index Year 4 Global Report: Pathways to a Healthy Future for Women has been released at the World Economic Forum in Davos, presenting a comprehensive data-rich examination of women’s health across 142 countries based on responses from over 146,000 individuals, revealing a global score of 53 out of 100, unchanged since its inception and a sobering reminder of the persistent health challenges faced by women globally.
The report uncovers concerning trends that demand urgent attention, as for the first time in the Index’s history, global cancer testing rates among women have declined, with only 10% of women screened in the past year. This startling decrease equates to approximately 60 million fewer women receiving potentially life-saving tests. At the same time, women’s emotional health remains fragile, with high levels of sadness and worry affecting millions, while 38% of women struggle to afford food and 32% lack adequate shelter, impacting nearly 1 billion women globally. These interconnected issues highlight the critical need for integrated multidimensional solutions addressing both systemic and individual health barriers.
At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we provide direct insights as the findings often reflect the communities we serve in LMICs. Our frontline programming and healthcare advancements in maternal, newborn, and child health, encompassing cancer prevention, reproductive health, and emotional wellbeing, aim to bridge the gaps in access and equity by coupling evidence-based interventions with community-centred impact.
The Hologic Global Women’s Health Index is a call to action for policymakers, healthcare leaders, and global advocates, to invest in preventive care, improve access to quality healthcare, and address systemic inequalities that perpetuate health challenges. I encourage everyone to engage with the full report, reflect on its implications, and join the global effort to prioritise women’s health as the foundation for a more equitable future.
