Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now

On this United Nations Human Rights Day, which marks the conclusion of 16 Days of Activism, I was delighted to lead the Wellbeing Foundation Africa bilateral meeting with His Excellency Mr Carlos Rojas-Arbulu, Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, and his team.

As I reflected upon the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted 76 years ago today, a document which continues to serve as a global blueprint for peaceful and inclusive societies, with the promise of dignity, equality, and justice for all, I expressed my appreciation for Canada’s robust commitments to promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls, both domestically and internationally.

As we explored collaborative opportunities, focusing on women and youth leadership, this meeting, aligning with the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, focused on how human rights are a pathway to solutions, playing a critical role as a preventative, protective and transformative force for good, with the Wellbeing Foundation Africa reaffirming its unwavering commitment to upholding and championing these inalienable rights, especially in the face of growing challenges and misinformation, as we must all speak up against hate, mobilise for equality, and reinvigorate the global movement for human rights.

Human rights can empower individuals and communities to forge a better and healthier tomorrow. By embracing and trusting the full power of human rights as the path to the world we want, we can become more peaceful, equal and sustainable.
