Stride for HER Rights: A Walkathon for Advancing Maternal Health in Nigeria
Last Saturday, I had the privilege of delivering a policy advocacy keynote address at the Stride for HER Rights Walkathon, led by Global Citizen Africa, advocating for maternal and neonatal health rights. Traversing the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, each step symbolised our collective demand for justice, dignity, and equitable healthcare for women and newborns in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.
At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we believe that quality maternal, newborn, and child healthcare is a fundamental human right. Through our Mamacare360 Antenatal and Postnatal Classes, we have seen firsthand the power of investing in maternal health. Yet, many women still face barriers—not just to safe childbirth, but to something even more basic: the right to survive pregnancy and experience empowered motherhood.
The Stride for HER Rights Walkathon brought together partners and dedicated organisations to emphasise the urgent need for increased health financing to make maternal health a national and global priority. It called for the strengthening of community health systems to empower midwives and frontline workers, ensuring that quality healthcare reaches the most vulnerable. Additionally, it underscored the necessity of policies that guarantee no woman dies while giving life, reinforcing the importance of sustainable and equitable healthcare solutions for all.
When women have access to quality healthcare, societies thrive, economies grow, and communities become more resilient. Investing in maternal health is not just a moral obligation—it is an economic imperative, unlocking prosperity and opportunities for future generations.
Let’s keep striding for HER rights. Sustainable change happens when we walk together! 👣💙
