As a Champion of the World Economic Forum’s Global Alliance for Women’s Health, this work week marked a pivotal stride in advancing and actioning the commitments that emerged from the Global Activators Network on Maternal Health Workshop held in March, convened by World Economic Forum in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s MAMII Sector-Wide Approach Units and championed by Ferring Pharmaceuticals’ Safe Birth.
On Monday, the Midwifery Training Focus Group Virtual Working Session engaged the Wellbeing Foundation Africa alongside leading partners including Gates Foundation Nigeria, UNFPA Nigeria, World Health Organization, Maternity Foundation, with discussions centred on national integration and accreditation pathways for Nigeria, as we further the WBFA commitment to supporting training infrastructure, supplying qualified personnel, and ensuring alignment with MAMII and national systems through coordinated ownership and sustainable adaptation.
This morning’s Maternal Health Supplies Focus Group Virtual Working Session on Scaling Quality-Assured Supplies highlighted Roche Diagnostics’ critical insights into the Nigerian landscape for preeclampsia diagnostics and maternal hypertension management. The Elecsys® sFlt-1 and PlGF biomarkers demonstrated real opportunities to enhance early detection and clinical response to preeclampsia, a leading cause of maternal and fetal complications, while the session also tackled practical strategies to improve equitable access to diagnostics, therapeutics, and a resilient supply chain that can support life-saving maternal care.
My participation across both working groups reflects our shared commitment to the World Economic Forum’s Global Activators Network’s mission to reduce maternal mortality through bold public-private-philanthropic collaboration, with both sessions aligning directly with the strategic objectives of the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative (MAMII), an ambitious, data-driven approach to building a resilient maternal health ecosystem across 172 high-burden local government areas in Nigeria.
Through deepened partnership, policy coherence, and health system innovation, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa is proud to contribute to a future where no woman is left behind, because it should never cost life to give life.
