Lighting the Path for Newborn Health: My Visit to Project Oscar – Light for Life Training Sessions

Yesterday, I had the privilege of conducting a field visit and observing the ongoing Project Oscar – Light for Life five-day training session. This critical initiative is dedicated to strengthening neonatal care across Nigeria, as the Wellbeing Foundation Africa continues its mission in implementing the pioneering Neonatal Jaundice Screening, Treatment, and Kernicterus Prevention Program.

The Comprehensive Newborn Care Course training for secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities, led by NEST360, and the training for primary healthcare facilities, led by the Solina Centre for International Development and Research, represents a significant step forward in equipping frontline workers with the necessary expertise, tools, and resources to ensure early detection and effective treatment of neonatal jaundice. Supported by our valued social impact partners, Reckitt, these sessions and this program are designed to empower healthcare providers with the knowledge and clinical skills to enhance newborn survival and improve the quality of care.

Neonatal jaundice remains a leading yet preventable cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. By investing in advanced screening technologies, phototherapy equipment, and evidence-based clinical training, we are actively working towards reducing the burden of this condition and ensuring that every newborn receives the care they deserve.

Engaging directly with the dedicated healthcare professionals participating in this capacity-building program, I was deeply inspired by their unwavering dedication. Their commitment to improving neonatal outcomes through early intervention, accurate diagnosis, and compassionate care is truly commendable. The Wellbeing Foundation Africa remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and advocating for policies that prioritise maternal, newborn, and child health across Nigeria.

I extend my gratitude to all our partners and stakeholders leading this vital work, as we light the path towards a future where no newborn is left in the shadows of preventable illness, and every child is given the brightest start in life.
