It was truly an honour to engage with the management of the African Medical Centre of Excellence Abuja (AMCE), as I honoured an invitation to participate in the high-level tour, led by African Export–Import Bank President Professor Benedict Oramah, alongside Former Vice President HE Namadi Sambo, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Secretary General of the Federation, George Akume, Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong, the AMCE CEO Mr Brian Deaver, and esteemed Board of Directors yesterday.
As a quaternary-level multi-specialty 500- bed hospital facility, the AMCE Abuja will focus on the treatment of three core non-communicable diseases, namely Oncology, Hematology and Cardiology, in addition to general care capabilities.
When operational, the facility will tackle the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, capital flight and brain drain of qualified medical personnel. AMCE will contribute to the socio-economic development of the Nigerian economy by creating approximately 3,000 jobs during its construction and operational phases, providing prompt, lifesaving detection and management of serious diseases delivered to over 200,000 patients in Nigeria and a further 150,000 patients from other African countries within its first five years of operation; and promote intra-regional trade in medical services and strengthening supply chains in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors.
It is a privilege to engage with, encourage and commend the African Export–Import Bank and its partner, Kings College Hospital, London, on this pioneering AMCE initiative, which stands as a cornerstone in redefining healthcare delivery across Africa. The establishment of AMCE marks a significant moment in advancing Universal Health Coverage and ensuring that the continent’s healthcare systems are strengthened to provide world-class medical services, research, and training.
